Book Smiles: Promoting Literacy

Larry Abrams, the founder and executive director of Book Smiles, a non-profit organization, presented the mission and history of the organization. Book Smiles takes in adult books, gives them new life, and distributes them to promote childhood literacy, support educators, and strengthen communities. Abrams shared his personal journey, including his background in the Navy, teaching, and business, which led him to start Book Smiles. He emphasized the importance of access to books for children and discussed the disparities in reading levels among students from different socioeconomic backgrounds. Abrams also highlighted the role of teachers and the broader educational system in addressing these issues.
