Harlem Globetrotters

Eric Nemeth tells us a bit about the Globetrotters and his experiences working for them.

For example, they once played a game on the roof of the Spectrum in Philadelphia, and twice on ice (with special shoes).

The are many honorary Globetrotters, 9 of which are popes!

Currently 3 women are on the roster,

The club was started in Chicago by Herb Saperstein and their name was the Savoy Big 5.

He challenged our memories of the team and those with the correct answer won a prize...

PERSPECTIVE ON CUBA by Abe Ferdas

Abe, emigrated from Cuba in the   50's with his family, After the Batista era.

Abe told us a little about their life in Cuba and how his family manged after they arrived in the US.

In the late 50's the US was heavily invested in Cuba. Most cane sugar came from Cuba. It was their major crop and while the companies and the politicians were making money, most of the people were poor and illiterate and had little medical care.

The revolution changed that and now the people get an education and medical care is universally available.

At the collapse of the USSR, Cuba made an alliance with Venezuela for oil and in return Cuba provides / provided them medical care. With the fear of a collapse of the government of Venezuela, Cuba has aligned with the US.

This is a work in progress. The embargo rules are still in effect.  Some items to be worked out are the handling of the US companies assets seized after the revolution.
